Well, this morning, just before 7:30 Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, meaning 6 more weeks of winter is on the way. This is actually a prediction that is more common than not for the groundhog.
If you are wondering about Punxsutawney Phil’s track-record, I have broken it down for you year by year.

Usually the Storm Team gets an advanced copy of the Almanac. This year our weather center has yet to be graced by the book. That is beside the point.

As of midnight, we still stand four inches away from the “Snowiest Season On Record”. We picked up 1.4″ yesterday, which takes our seasonal snow total to 145.1″. Close, but no cigar!

Typical lake effect snows developed over the weekend spreading three inches to over a foot across the area. Many feel that we should have broken the “Snowiest Seasons” record, but we are still lingering in fourth place!
The “official” reporting weather station for Erie is at Erie International Airport. We need to exceed 149.1″ there to [...]

I hope you enjoyed the mild weekend! As I said, many of us are starting to see more grass and less snow in our yards, and from what most of you are telling me, this is a welcome sight. Actually, for most of the area, this is the first time we are “seeing green” since [...]

Seeing his shadow is not out of the norm for Phil. Of the 120 years (including this one), he has seen his [...]

It can always be worse! After our recent cold snap (or as some called it a “cold-OH-SNIPPITY-Snap”), Margaret Keller of Albion sent us a picture from 1994.
The thermometer reads about -25 degrees. The coldest temperature ever recorded in nearby Erie (the official National Weather Service Station) was recorded that same day at -18.
